The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) approved an amendment to the “Nebraska Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Program Section 1115(a) Demonstration.” Approval of this amendment provides the state authority to establish a serious mental illness (SMI)/serious emotional disturbance (SED) demonstration initiative. Under this initiative, the state will be able to receive federal financial participation (FFP) for services furnished to Medicaid beneficiaries who are short term residents in facilities that meet the definition of an Institution for Mental Diseases (IMD). Beneficiaries served in IMDs will have access to Medicaid state plan services and will be subject to the same medical necessity requirements.
This demonstration is effective through June 30, 2030. Today’s approval and other administrative documents can be found on the Medicaid.gov demonstration page.
