This is a digitally-colorized scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a flea.

Fleas are known to carry a number of diseases that are transferable to human beings through their bites, including plague, caused by the bacterium, Yersinia pestis.

This illustration depicts a three-dimensional (3D) computer-generated image of a number of drug-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae diplococcal bacteria. Note that extending from the organisms' exterior were type IV pili, or hair-like appendages, which in this case, are used to promote motility for these bacteria, and improve surface adherence. The artistic recreation was based upon scanning electron micrographic imagery.

It is important to know that objects, including these pencils, crayons, paper, etc., are known as fomites, which can act as transmitters of illnesses, for viruses and bacteria are able to remain alive on their surfaces after being handled by an ill child, who can then inadvertently transfer these "germs" to another child who subsequently handles these schoolroom objects.

Here, an elderly woman was in the process of preparing a fresh fish on her clean kitchen counter. Carefully using a large knife, the woman had cut into the fish's belly, and would subsequently extract the internal organs prior to finally cutting away the fillets.

During an Indonesian Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) campaign, implemented in order to improve coverage against filariasis, this woman, who was part of a team of medical personnel, was in the process of observing a group of schoolgirls in an elementary school located in Bukittinggi, West Sumatera, Indonesia, each of whom had been given a preventive medication with the intent to protect them against filariasis, a parasitic infection caused by roundworms.
