| Worldwide, 2.5 billion lack access to modern sanitation, putting them at risk of disease. Diarrhea remains a leading cause of child mortality and morbidity worldwide, with the vast majority of all deaths occurring among children under age 5. Access to toilets, safe water, vaccines, and simple interventions like oral rehydration solution (ORS) and zinc have the power to stop deadly diarrhea and save lives. As we celebrated #WorldToiletDay on 19 November, we should remember that universal access to toilets is one of the many necessary steps to ending preventable death. Because we can't wait for improved sanitation - Toilet Day Is Every Day. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Water and Development Strategy sets targets for a minimum number of people to be reached over 5 years: 10 million with sustainable water services and 6 million with sustainable sanitation services. Read how USAID and partners are expanding access to water supply and sanitation to promote better hygiene and fight preventable disease, especially to vulnerable communities. Read More |
