Great American Smokeout: Give Quitting a Try

Today is the Great American Smokeout. The idea is that if you give up smoking for the day, it may inspire you to continue and quit once and for all.

If you plan on quitting - good for you! You’ll be dramatically reducing your risk for cancers, heart attacks, and lung diseases!

Here are 5 ways you can get ready to quit smoking:

  1. Set a quit date. If not today, pick one in the next two weeks.

  2. Tell your friends and family you plan to quit - you’ll need their support. Ask them for encouragement and distractions when you feel the urge to have a cigarette.

  3. Anticipate and plan for challenges- come up with some alternatives to smoking when you have a craving. Some suggestions: take a walk, have a glass of water, call or text a friend.

  4. Remove cigarettes from your home, car, and workplace. It’ll be easier to quit without temptation around!

Talk to your doctor and pharmacist about your plan to quit. They can recommend nicotine patches, gums, or medicines to help you quit.
