PHIL Images From This Week

10/07/2016 08:00 AM EDT

This image depicts a young Asian-American schoolgirl who was in the process of drawing with a pencil on a piece of white paper. It is important to know that these objects, i.e., pencils, crayons, paper, etc., are known as fomites, which can act as transmitters of illnesses, for viruses and bacteria are able to remain alive on their surfaces after being handled by an ill child, who can then inadvertently transfer these "germs" to another child who subsequently handles these schoolroom objects.

This image captured during the 2014 West African Ebola outbreak, depicts CDC employee Jennifer, and a lab technician in Guéckédou, Guinea, as they were demonstrating the first step involved in the preparation of lab samples, which entails soaking the sealed samples in a container filled with a bleach solution, in order to disinfect the exteriors of the sample containers.

Under a moderately-high magnification of 5000X, this colorized scanning electron micrograph (SEM) depicted a large grouping of Gram-negative Legionella pneumophila bacteria.

This image was captured in February, 2013, on the Caribbean island nation of Haiti, within the Malaria Laboratory located inside Haiti's National Public Health Lab, Laboratoire National de Santé Publique, situated in the country's capital, Port-au-Prince. In this particular view, you can see a laboratory technician in the process of conducting blood sample evaluations, and using a computer in order to record patient data.

Created in December, 2014, by CDC Medical Officer, Laurie Kamimoto, M.D., M.P.H., this image depicts the Ebola checkpoint between Port Loko and Western Districts, Sierra Leone. What you're looking at, is a handwashing station, which had been created by some enterprising individual(s). The jugs could be manipulated by way of a foot pedal created out of branches and cords, which would then be used to tip the jugs, thereby, releasing the chlorine mixture contained inside.
