As 2015 approaches its mid-year mark, we celebrate the work the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief and our implementing partners, especially the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), have contributed to creating an HIV vaccine.
In February 2015, based on the success of the RV144 trial in Thailand, researchers launched HVTN 100 in South Africa to investigate HIV vaccine safety and immune responses among participants. This trial is important since no other single approach is likely to have as dramatic an impact on the HIV pandemic as an effective vaccine. It is an essential tool toward the goal of an AIDS-free generation and ultimately eliminating AIDS.
We look forward to further scientific advances in understanding the behavior of both the human immune system and HIV itself, promising to lead us to a vaccine that can be added to our arsenal of HIV prevention tools.
