Dear Reader,

Improved hearing is possible. And in very little time you could be chatting on the phone, delighting in family visits, watching and listening to your favorite movies, or catching up on local gossip with a friend or neighbor.

Age-related hearing loss is a problem faced by one-third of people over 65, and half of those over 75. If you think your hearing is fading, it probably is.

If so, it’s something that can be easily fixed. With new technology making hearing aids smaller and more powerful with less distortion, and with improved surgical procedures, better hearing is easier than ever before.

There are hearing aids so small they can fit into your ear canal. Only you will know you’re wearing them.

There are hearing aids with wireless technology that connect directly to your TV, mobile phone, or home phone, giving you seamless hearing. It’s like having your own personal headphones for each device.

But hearing aids aren't a cure-all. Some people need surgery to restore hearing. How do you know what's right for you? Hearing Loss: A guide to prevention and treatment, a Special Health Report created by Harvard Medical School doctors, will guide you through all you need to know about having better hearing.

It will answer questions like:

How bad is my hearing loss? Is there anything I can do to stop my hearing loss from getting worse? Is tinnitus (ringing in the ears) controllable? What kind of hearing loss do I have — sensorineural or conductive — and what difference does it make?

You’ll also find answers to the following questions:

What tests should I expect from my doctor and other hearing health professionals?
Who do I need to talk to about the new hearing aids available?
Do I need one hearing aid or two?
What types of hearing loss require surgery?
Who do I speak to if my hearing aid isn’t working properly?
Are there any payment schemes I can use?

These questions and more are answered in this special report. It will also give you helpful contacts to further guide you to available resources geared toward people with hearing problems.
