Under a high magnification of 400X, this photomicrograph revealed some of the ultrastructural morphology exhibited by a trematode, Fasciolopsis buski, egg, which is described as broadly ellipsoidal, operculated and measuring 130µm to 150µm long, by 60 µm to 90µm wide. These eggs are unembryonated when passed in feces. The eggs of F. buski can be difficult to distinguish from Fasciola hepatica, although the abopercular end of the latter often has a roughened or irregular area.

Produced by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), this digitally-colorized scanning electron micrograph (SEM) depicts a number of red-colored Salmonella sp. bacteria, in the process of invading a mustard-colored, ruffled immune cell. Salmonella sp. bacteria are a common cause of foodborne disease.

This 2005 photograph depicted a young boy holding a box turtle, portraying a look of wonderment mixed with curiosity, as the turtle looks on with almost a sense of nonchalance. The importance of this image lies in the reality that turtles carry germs known as Salmonella, which are potentially dangerous to children. In fact, the sale of turtles less than 4 inches in length has been banned in the United States since 1975. The ban by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has prevented an estimated 100,000 cases of salmonellosis annually in children.Read More »

This 2014 image, captured in Sierra Leone by U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Public Health Analyst, Daniel "Dan" Martin, depicts a student of CDC's infection control course in the process of learning how to properly put on, and remove personal protective equipment (PPE), while rinsing her gloved hands in chlorinated water supplied by a handwashing station.
